This paper analyzes the emergent security implications of Russia's demographic crisis. It examines the connection between the reasons for the decline in Russia's population and the likely success of policies put in place to arrest that decline, and the linkage between the impact of the causes of decline and the domestic and foreign policy consequences for the Russian state. The author concludes that the systemic impact of population decline will prove critical to characterizing and determining Russia's foreign and security policy over the medium-and long-term.
