Since its foundation almost three centuries ago, St Petersburg has occupied a special place in Russia's history. Once the Russian capital from 1712 until 1918 when it was replaced by Moscow, St Petersburg is today the second largest city in Russia and one of the country's leading industrial centers. The city's economic stature and European orientation promise to make it an increasingly important actor in both domestic and international arenas and could even lead to the city playing a pivotal role in maintaining stability in the Baltic-rim and in Russia's integration into global political and economic structures.
