This edition considers the current state of the Russian media landscape. Firstly, Maria Lipman outlines that the Kremlin continues to allow some small-scale and niche independent publications to operate in spite of a wider crackdown on media, because this does not reduce the public’s acquiescence to the regime and helps to let off some steam. Secondly, Nozima Akhrarkhodjaeva examines how the Russian government ensures that media outlets take a pro-Kremlin position without resorting to overtly coercive measures, instead relying on the “softer” use of its administrative resources. Thirdly, we have a collection of reports and polls on the consumption, quality and public trust of media reporting in Russia.
