This paper explores the economic legacy of colonial-era political constructs in India’s North East Region, which separated the region’s hill tribes from other groups in the plains of Assam. The authors also looks at how India can sustain economic development efforts in the region following the country’s adoption of a single indirect taxation system for the whole country, including with regards to the region’s participation in India’s Act East Policy and entry into the demanding ASEAN market.
