Jun 2018

This publication reflects on the recent victory of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey´s June 2018 presidential and parliamentary elections. Key insights include 1) that for Erdogan, winning the elections amounts to a mandate to restore the lost glory of the Ottoman Caliphate and Turkey’s position in the world; 2) that this will consequently have a major impact on the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe; and 3) Erdogan’s use of the ultranationalist Grey Wolf hand signal during rallies and more leaves no doubt that he will strive to dominate the territory coveted by the Muslim Brotherhood as well as that claimed by the pan-Turkism movement.
