This paper argues that contemporary states must cooperate on energy security rather than confining it to national security. The author highlights the importance of government policies in long-term energy economic security and discusses the impacting energy economic security, including economic growth and energy, energy intensity and per capita income growth. He also explores the relationship between energy, the environment and economic growth, and globalization. He discusses how government policy can play a role in meeting US energy security challenges, concluding that changes in trade, markets and factors of production require flexible policies and regulations to adapt to changing conditions.
