This paper discusses the US nuclear power option as one that is environmentally friendly and cost effective. The author argues that meeting energy demands and environmental constraints requires a mix of energy resources and use of nuclear energy to meet carbon emission obligations, requiring development of nuclear plant technology and extended plant life. He describes the status of US electricity generated from nuclear energy, highlights major industry issues including costs to generate electricity, dispose of nuclear waste, industry regulations and public perception. It concludes with a discussion of the greening of US nuclear power, potential of supply industry restructuring and brief conclusions.
