This paper discusses natural gas as an energy source with environmental and economic benefits. The author outlines the role of Caterpillar in the natural gas industry in order to highlight the role of business and and technology to facilitate energy efficiency and competitiveness. He discusses the economics of natural gas, including global supply and demand, investing in infrastructure and the advantages of doing so. He also discusses the natural gas value chain, including field gas compression, pipeline transmission and household use. The paper concludes that the gas industry can best be clarified through an exploration of the past.
