This paper explores the advantages of using renewable energy sources to produce electricity. It describes the history of renewable energy in the US and how it has been measured qualitatively rather than quantitatively. The author argues that improvements in technology and efficiency have affected performance, reliability and prices, stating that the expanded role of renewable energy depends on competing with fossil fuel electricity generation. However, deregulation and increased competition within the utility sector could change incorporate with existing utility structures. The paper concludes that renewable energy should be employed out of support for technologies that reduce greenhouse emissions.
