This paper discusses India's energy security as a the basis for socioeconomic development, exploring renewable and non-renewable alternatives. It argues that meeting demands of energy consumption by India's growing population entails a large-scale comprehensive energy capacity expansion. The authors demonstrate that by shifting away from oil and fossil fuel energy toward hydro and nuclear power, India can increase its environmental benefits. They also show that energy sector reform requires a well-established institutional framework consisting of regulatory agencies, sector rules and regulations, and policy guidelines.
