This paper discusses activities in North Korea concerning its heightened military activity and belligerent diplomacy, the ill health of the supreme leader Kim Jong-il and succession politics. The authors believe that while in the past North Korea's stubbornness and military power have been sufficient to extract economic concessions and grudging political recognition from the rest of the world, this might no longer be the case in the future.
