The first of a series of 'Peace Mediation Essentials' edited by the Mediation Support Project, this guidance note takes a gender-sensitive perspective to the specific context of peace negotiations. Without taking the gender-specific context of conflict and peacebuilding into account, negotiation processes lack substance and legitimacy and this may jeopardize their sustainability. The text describes the conceptual framework and the outlines some of the options for mediators and how to address these issues in peace processes. It also contains key questions for mediators to consider before, during and after a peace process.
