This paper begins with a historic account of counter insurgency operations in Algeria and Malaysia. The author then proceeds by comparing these historic accounts with today's situation in Afghanistan and lists a set of factors governments should consider when engaging in counter insurgency. The paper concludes that a successful counter insurgency strategy for Afghanistan needs to overcome problems of ineffectiveness as well as political constraints and correctness.
