As tensions between the US and the USSR increased during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, Adlai Stevenson, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, wrote a letter to US President John F Kennedy. In this letter, Stevenson contemplated the USSR's and the world's reaction to a possible US attack on Cuban missile sites, and then suggested not taking rash action against Cuba or the USSR.
