The Code of Hammurabi is a well-preserved Babylonian collection of laws that date to circa 1800 BC. The sixth Babylonian king, Hammurabi, enacted the code, partial copies of which exist on a human-sized stone stele and various clay tablets. The Code consists of 282 laws that meted out punishments based on one’s social status.
