Following the European Union's decision to open membership negotiations with Turkey, the Turkish contribution to European security and defence has became increasingly important, thus requiring further analysis, both at national and European level. Turkey's role in maintaining peace and security in Europe, especially on the south-eastern front and in the Mediterranean area, is, indeed, a very important aspect of the co- operation between Turkey and the European Union. The study underlines the positive aspects of this collaboration, and, at the same time, the problems emerged, aiming at identifying their possible evolution.
