Since the establishment of official relations between the EC and the USSR, Russian-European energy relations have largely evolved as a result of numerous changes regarding both partners: the Soviet Union disintegrated, allowing Russia to emerge as an international actor, and the EC gave birth to the EU. As to their energy interactions, e.g. natural gas supplies, over the last 30 years Russia has been a reliable supplier of gas to the European market. Lately, however, the relationship between these two trading partners has degraded.
