The upheaval in Syria is of grand strategic importance for the West because it pits the resurgent Sunni Arab Islamism against the region's aspirant non-Arab Islamist powers Iran and Turkey. Standing between them as a buffer and preventing a cataclysmic eruption are the key element of the Fertile Crescent of minorities and especially their Levant section outside Israel. The outcome of the struggle for Syria will determine Europe's access to the energy reserves and markets of the greater Middle East and even Central Asia.
