In this contribution to the workshop "European and Asian Perspectives on International Security Policies in South and South East Asia", held on 29 September 2011, the author addresses the terrorist threat in the EU. In 2010, 249 terrorist attacks were reported in nine EU member states, while 611 individuals were arrested for terrorism-related offenses. The majority of these attacks were in France (84) and Spain (90). The author analyzes the EU strategy to counter international terrorism and the EU institutions engaged in it. The lecture concludes with recommendations for decision makers in the EU member states.
