This policy brief discusses French-American relations in the wake of French 2012 parliamentary elections. The author argues that over the next five years, French President Hollande and his government are likely to act like socialists at home and Gaullists abroad, however, these policies fail to address the genuine problems that France faces. Domestically, instead of creating an ideal social democracy, the author argues that France needs to enhance its competitiveness. Internationally, instead of protecting French national independence, France needs to find a way forward in Europe. With respect to the French-American relationship, the brief recommends more collaboration between the respective governments and private industries.
