This paper addresses policies among Western governments in their relations with Egypt and the country's ruling government. Controversial actions from President Mohamed Morsi in late 2012 have put in question the extent to which the government is managing its democratic transition. While North Atlantic governments may partially suspend or withdraw some aid or make it conditional, it is very unlikely that they will stop their support for Egypt or fundamentally change their policy in the short or even medium term, argues the author. Nevertheless, in the context of the emerging "gray democracy" that recent developments in Egypt seem to anticipate, it will not be easy to calibrate a policy of unbroken Western support.
