This paper examines the question of how Libya went from having a successful election in July 2012, which saw political parties and individuals competing democratically, to a bitterly polarized assembly only a year later. The authors also assess the relative influence of the two dominant groups - loosely defined as the Islamists and the non-Islamists - on the Libyan political landscape.
