This commentary discusses whether the 2011 New Deal of Engagement in Fragile States could address some of the developmental gaps in fragile or conflict-affected states (FACS). The author critically assesses the causes of negative development outcomes in these states that prevent them from reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and concludes that gender inequality and fragility have to be integrated into the New Deal to reach MDG objectives.
