This paper challenges the received wisdom that “everybody knows you have to be corrupt in order to do business in Asia.” It argues that Western notions of corruption should be distinguished from the Asian way of doing business, such as the Chinese “Guanxi” and the Indian reliance on family ties. The author says, that these examples actually show how, in the absence of reliable legal institutions, people have developed their own security systems in order to protect themselves.
