This commentary examines the response by the EU and the Middle Eastern states to the human and political crisis in Syria and argues that the EU's efforts have been limited, uneven, and outpaced by events on the ground. The author says that despite the Union's economic crisis and public opinion of asylum seekers, it must take in more Syrian refugees for the sake of its defining values and spend more on humanitarian aid for those affected by the crisis in Syria.
