This article reviews the results of Turkey’s March 2014 municipal elections and discusses expectations for the upcoming presidential (August 2014) and general (June 2015) elections. The author first outlines the main features of the municipal campaign, and explains the reasons for the growing antagonism between Prime Minister Erdoğan’s AKP party and the Gülen Movement. It then analyzes the main parties’ electoral results, highlighting the stagnation of the People’s Republican Party (CHP) and the growth of the nationalist (MHP) and Kurdish (BDP) parties. Finally, it comments on the upcoming presidential elections and suggests there is likely to be more political tension and polarization as well as assaults on the media and other institutions.
