This paper discusses Europe's dependence on Russian gas and the options it has to diversify its energy supply and diminish Russia’s market share. It also examines how Gazprom, the only Russian company legally allowed by Russian law to export Russian natural gas through pipelines is trying to secure its dominant position in the European gas market. Overall, the author argues that the prospects for medium and long-term European gas supply security look promising thanks to potential LNG imports from around the world as well as the planned trans-Adriatic and trans-Anatolian pipelines.
