This paper examines the challenges facing the international community in Ukraine following the ousting of president Yanukovych in early 2014 and the subsequent Russian intervention in Crimea. The author comments on Russia's perceptions of the crisis and Germany's efforts to de-escalate the situation. He argues that the EU and Russia should act as natural geopolitical partners rather than rivals in order to solve the Ukrainian crisis.
