This paper examines the global security environment now facing NATO. In doing so, it specifically argues that the rise of Asia, the US's increasingly ambivalent role in the world, Russia's 'assertive' foreign policy, and rampant instability in the Middle East have all helped create the most strategically constraining and competitive security environment that Brussels has faced since 1991. After characterizing the problems that the Alliance now confronts, the paper closes by providing policy recommendations on how NATO should proceed.
