This paper examines the state of EU-Turkey relations and argues that European accession negotiations no longer provide the most suitable framework for ties between the Union and Ankara. The author suggests there are three main reasons for this argument: 1) the point that EU-Turkey accession negotiations have become largely negative as the have been blocked for such a long time; 2) the character and content of the accession process; and 3) changes in the geopolitical situation in Europe and beyond as demonstrated by the civil war in Syria and Russia's involvement in the Ukraine crisis.
