Publication

This publication discusses current challenges and opportunities in civil aviation and search-and-rescue operations in light of the disappearance of Malaysian Airline flight MH370 in March 2014 and the shooting down of Malaysian Airline flight MH17 over Eastern Ukraine in July 2014. The author provides concrete recommendations regarding traffic legislation, the governance of civil aviation, technological aspects and standard operating procedures that could help prevent future civil aviation disasters. This paper was first presented at the 3rd Germany-Malaysia Security Dialogue (GMSD) in Kuala Lumpur on 14 October 2014.
