This paper argues that the 2014 Ukraine crisis and the September 2014 NATO Summit in Wales was a turning-point for re-energizing the Alliance’s cohesion and commitments to its core security tasks after 20 years of inactivity. The author looks at the summit's outcomes, notably the Readiness Plan and the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force and discusses the challenges some of the members face as they attempt to balance reductions in domestic defense spending with NATO defense spending commitments.
