This brief examines the political and economic reforms introduced by the Moroccan authorities since the beginning of the Arab Spring in 2011. In particular, the authors focus on the factors that enabled Morocco to avoid destabilizing political upheaval or major economic disruption following the Arab Spring. These include 1) the king’s legitimacy; 2) the country's efforts to draw up an economic plan with support from the IMF; and 3) the country's political reforms. They argue, however, that even with these factors in place, much remains to be done to substantially open the political space and create economic growth in the country.
