This paper discusses the growing relationship between Latin American countries and China, and whether the former can benefit from Chinese investment while also avoiding the murky deal-making that can ruin the rule of law. In particular, the paper’s author explores 1) the four factors that are shaping this budding relationship (political and regional relations; trade investment and financing; energy and infrastructure; and culture and education); 2) the bilateral links China is cultivating with Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, and Venezuela; and 3) how the relationship between Latin America and China could be further improved.
