This brief contemplates the future prospects of the Nordstream 2 pipeline project, which is meant to bring gas supplies from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea. After providing a general overview of the Nordstream 1 and Nordstream 2 projects, the brief then considers the financing of Nordstream 2 and its compatibility with the EU’s liberalization law. It concludes that the overarching problem afflicting Nordstream 2 at the moment is the frosty relationship between Russia and the EU.
