This brief explores the future utility of wind- and solar-based power. More specifically, the brief’s author asks and answers four questions. 1) What are the prospects for more-than-incremental increases in solar and wind power up to 2035? 2) What are the economic, political, and technological impediments to breakthroughs in renewables and the transformation of energy markets? 3) What would be the economic and geopolitical consequences of shifting from a reliance on natural gas and coal to solar and wind sources? And 4) who would be the winners and losers in such a shift?
