This paper discusses the crucial role Italy is about to play in Prime Minister David Cameron's attempts to recalibrate the UK's relationship with the EU. Rome’s challenge will be to balance its long-standing commitment to strengthening European integration with its interests in keeping a country the size and influence of the UK anchored to Brussels. As the paper's author sees it, Matteo Renzi’s government should ultimately 1) support British proposals on competitiveness; 2) be pragmatic when it comes to sovereignty issues; 3) be constructive but cautious in the case of economic governance, 4) and remain firm in its support of EU migration policies.
