How should a society deal holistically with past traumas, particularly when trying to hold the perpetrators of mass human rights violations to account? This paper argues that it should subscribe to four principles or pillars -- the right to know; the right to justice; the right to reparations; and the guarantee of non-recurrence. The principles, in turn, can then act as mechanisms that 1) help transform victims and perpetrators into citizens with equal rights, and 2) establish a long-term culture of reconciliation, accountability and the rule of law.
