This report reviews hydrocarbon-related developments in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, as of mid-July 2016. In particular, it examines 1) the commercial and political dimensions of natural gas extraction in the waters off Israel, Cyprus, and Egypt; 2) the prospects for a marine gas transportation line to Greece; 3) the EU’s interest in securing gas supplies from the Eastern Mediterranean area; and 4) the prospects for a gas trading hub in the region. The report’s author concludes by providing policy recommendations on how to facilitate the growth of a hydrocarbon industry in the near future.
