This publication reflects on the recent adoption of the 2018 Maritime Boundary Treaty between Timor-Leste and Australia, established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The author highlights that the treaty demarcated maritime boundaries between the two nations for the first time and increased revenue sharing from gas reserves in the territory concerned in favor of Timor-Leste. She also 1) provides a historical overview of the longstanding history of maritime disputes within the region; 2) offers a brief analysis of the new UNCLOS conciliation process; and 3) identifies key lessons that may aid in the resolution of similar disputes in the future.
