This paper explains why conservative elements within the US political establishment want to accomplish the above ends. In the first case, they fear that Germany’s wealth and technology, when coupled with Russia’s natural resources, manpower, and geopolitical muscle flexing, would endanger America’s mega-regional dominance. In the second instance, the arch conservatives’ worries about China’s One Belt, One Road project are fundamentally the same, despite the benefits the project will ideally provide (i.e., promote Eurasian economic integration and reduce the ungoverned spaces where terrorist organizations thrive).
