This publication reflects on the implications of Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un's Hanoi summit for the US, North Korea, and for China. Key insights include 1) that President Xi Jinping is the principal beneficiary of the summit’s collapse, because it supports his view that only a Chinese-dominated tributary-style system of relationships between China and its Northeast Asia neighbors can provide long-term stability and growth; 2) Kim Jong-Un considers his meeting with Trump a turning point in the overall relations with the US and is reportedly losing the will to continue denuclearization negotiations with Washington due to the summit; 3) the US has once again proven that it remains oblivious to the unfolding of global history, and more.
