This paper questions four assumptions that have dictated the formulation of European migrant policy over the past two decades: 1) there are numerous alternative migration destinations; 2) you can restrict economic migration, 3) SAR missions create migration incentives; and 4) financial assistance is a cure-all for migration issues. In addition to exploding these myths, the text critically evaluates current migration management practices and recommends ready alternatives to them.
