This paper addresses the need for a formal ending of the Korean War by signing a peace mechanism or treaty, commenting on the steps necessary to facilitate such an accord. The paper outlines a peace treaty's preconditions, what needs to be included in it and what the state of the Four-Party Talks is. Subsequently, the paper discusses South Korea's Sunshine Policy and the country's political considerations and sheds light on US political interests. The paper argues that no actor stands to gain more than North Korea from a peace treaty, since its options remain very limited otherwise.
