This paper discusses Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which defines the fundamental mutual commitment of the members of the Alliance, stating that an attack on one member shall be considered an attack on all and provides for appropriate responses, including the possible use of force. The author examines Article 5 from a historical perspective and discusses its relevance for potential NATO enlargement in the 21st century.
