What role should naval forces and coast guards play in addressing contemporary migrant crises? In order to address this question, this paper examines 1) how naval forces conduct humanitarian operations aimed at securing territorial waters against criminals at sea, drug smuggling and human trafficking; and 2) the risks and challenges associated with ongoing maritime security operations dealing with human migration by looking at current maritime security activities being undertaken by NATO, the EU and FRONTEX in the Mediterranean; and more.
