This publication contends that as China and the US intensify their trade war, countries with an alliance with Washington's as well as friendly ties to Beijing are put into an increasingly difficult position. The text's author argues that states that rely on the US for defense are now being pressured to choose sides. For example, the US is urging the EU to boycott Chinese telecom companies and there is increasing pressure on Israel to cancel Chinese investments in infrastructure projects. This situation poses a particular dilemma for small states that have an economic and defense dependency on larger states as this could severely constrain their foreign policy options.
