This paper discusses African regional integration and examines the role of the EU in the process. The author describes the purpose of regional integration on the continent and argues that the African Union and the building blocs of the African Economic Community are the products of several crises in African unity and development. The paper concludes that African region-building efforts are going through a formative period comparable to the period Europe went through between the mid-1940s and the mid-1950s.
