This paper examines the differences among various forms of renewable energy. The author argues that these differences are important to determine the future use of renewable energy and make use of the complementarities for electricity generation. He concludes that changes in the electric sector have made the use of renewable energy uncertain and that only the support for new technologies to reduce greenhouse gases could enhance the role of renewable energy.
