This paper argues that when we look at the relationship between diplomacy and digital/social media, the challenges posed by the latter is not the technology itself or its impact on diplomatic practices, but rather, its impact on the public arena in which diplomats operate. That arena, as the paper goes on to describe, is now defined by emotionalism, ‘affective news’, do-it-yourself politics, and an emphasis on shared feelings.
